Designing Education Projects (DEP) Workshops
Client:
NOAA Office of Education
Project Description:
Beginning in early 2005, Dr. Day-Miller has worked as an Education Consultant for NOAA OEd. Responsibilities included working with the contractors who conducted the DEP workshops in April 2007 by providing logistical and technical support for developing the workshops and contributing to workshop facilitation. In addition, she conducted and created all evaluation reports from the 2007 DEP workshops.
The evaluation consisted of four discrete reports.
1) Analyzed the data from the workshop evaluation instruments, and wrote the workshop evaluation report: The Designing Evaluation Projects: Evaluation Report of the 2007 Workshops. This report focused on the effectiveness of the April DEP workshops and included key findings, recommendations, and next steps.
2) Administered a questionnaire and collected and reported responses from the workshop developers and other NOAA headquarters level educators involved in implementing the workshops. This effort focused on recommended changes and improvements that could be made to the DEP workshops from the perspective of the workshop developers and facilitators.
3) Conducted a needs assessment for future workshops by interviewing additional NOAA headquarters educators who represent groups of NOAA education and outreach staff who may participate in future workshops. Designed and conducted the interviews, and transcribed, analyzed and reported these results.
4) Followed up with many of the 2007 workshop participants by conducting interviews with them targeted at gaining an understanding (from the participants perspective) of the value and usefulness of the workshops and ways the participants were using the knowledge and skills learned from the workshops. Designed and conducted the interviews, and transcribed, analyzed and reported the results, including offering key findings and recommendations for improving the workshops.

NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research (OER) Teacher Professional Development Institute (PDI) Facilitation and Evaluation
Client:
NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research (OER)
Project Description:
Since early 2007, Dr. Day-Miller has conducted numerous PDIs for K-12 teachers at various locations in the United States. These PDIs focus on introducing participants to the scientific and education efforts of NOAA OER. During each one (1) day PDI, Dr. Day-Miller provides background information for and facilitates five (5) lessons with approximately 24 teachers.
In collaboration with a colleague, Dr. Day-Miller is conducting an evaluation of the OER PDIs conducted through 2007. The evaluation consists of analyzing both quantitative and qualitative data collected during each PDI. The goal of the evaluation is to determine the effect of the PDIs on participant confidence, interest, and preparation in teaching OER content, the value of the OER website in implementing the OER curriculum, and factors influencing use of the OER curriculum by PDI participants.
